When our friend Matti Martin found out that we were going to be staying in Tofino, he asked if he could send us some of his gorgeous modern jewellery to photograph for the launch of a new collection. Although Matti Martin is based out of Winnipeg, MB, he was previously based in Kelowna where we were fortunate to have met him and get acquainted with his stunning work. Matti LOVES the West Coast and has wonderful memories of camping on Long Beach and waking up on grey misty mornings to the crashing of waves, cozied up with a freshly brewed cup of coffee. We took his inspiration and created a collection of images that showcases his gorgeous organic jewellery amidst the calming colours and ambiance of the West Coast.
During the 5 days we spent in Victoria before travelling to Tofino, we sought out the perfect West Coast clothing and accessories. Initially we contacted models, but Matti insisted that my beautiful wife, Katherine, was the perfect look for the job and I agree! The very talented Rhonda from Studio One Tofino offered to do hair and makeup. She even agreed to be involved as a 2nd model – yay! During the week we were in Tofino, the rain only stopped once and we rushed out to find the perfect landscape of mist and crashing surf.
Matti’s jewellery is organic and natural, reminiscent of the stones polished by the crashing waves. His goldsmithing is where these pieces really shine with architectural designs and creative finishing techniques featuring natural gemstones including Tibetan turquoise, blue chalcedony, rose cut sapphire, and diamonds. His attention to detail completes the finished look and makes these pieces something to treasure!
