About a year ago we met Sana and Logan for the first time when they met us in Kelowna to plan their ultra romantic engagement session which you can view here. When we found out about their upcoming Persian wedding planned at Sana’s family home where she grew up overlooking Burns lake in South Langley, BC, our jaws literally dropped.
Persian ceremonies are incredibly symbolic and lavish. The couple sits in front of a spread of items called a sofreh facing their guests. The table is decadently adorned with many items including flowers, sweets, breads, coins, candles, a mirror, and a Quran. During the ceremony Sana’s bridesmaids held a lace fabric above the couple with a few of the bridesmaids taking turns grinding cones of sugar above them to symbolize a sweet life together and sewing a corner of the fabric together to symbolize the union of the couple. After the ceremony family members and guests come up to give the couple gifts of gold in the form of jewelry or money.
Sana and Logan went all out with the little details for their wedding from providing flip-flops, blankets, and parasols for their guests to entertaining them during cocktail hour with golf chipping into the lake to giant life-size versions of checkers and jenga. We loved the garden party feel of their wedding, especially all those mason jars used for drinks – super stylish and eco friendly!
I think we could probably go on forever about this super stunning wedding, but we’ll tell it with images instead. Needless to say, Sana looked gorgeous in her fitted lace gown and Logan was ultra stylish in his khaki country chic suit (practical too in this hot summer weather!). But really, their love for one another was the main attraction. They absolutely glowed the entire day and there was so many heart warming moments, like Sana signing a song dedicated to her late father. Congrats Sana & Logan – we had such a fun time getting to know you both and wish you an amazing life together!
Dipping their pinky finger in honey and feeding it to each is another one of the beautiful ceremonial traditions of Persian weddings representing eternal happiness and sweetness in marriage.
Another Persian wedding tradition is the knife dance, which involves all of the bridesmaids as they tease the groom with the cake cutting knife, but will only give it to them if he pays enough – haha! It is traditional that he pays small amounts and gets refused by all the girls until a really good dancer lures him enough – then he pays the big bucks and is presented with the knife to cut the wedding cake. We can’t even explain how hilarious this was to watch and photograph!
